The International Weed Science Society (IWSS)

International Weed Science Congress 2025
Graduate Student Travel Award – Due June 15th, 2025

The IWSS continues its tradition of promoting and supporting the participation of graduate (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) students in the International Weed Science Congress. A limited number of travel grants will cover up to 50% of expenses, including registration fees, accommodation, and travel costs. The Graduate Student Award Committee will determine the recipients of travel grant awards. The most outstanding paper will receive the IWSS Larry Burrill Graduate Student Travel Award, which covers all expenses. The top five best papers will receive special recognition at the Congress, a certificate, and a plaque. The remaining awardees will receive a certificate.

To ensure equitable competition, candidates will be divided into two groups based on the country where they are pursuing their degree and the country’s income classification. The first group will be from the high-income category, and the second group will be from countries classified as upper-middle income, lower-middle income, and low-income. The top five papers will be from any country. Students will be grouped based on the country of study and not the country of origin.

Students who want to apply for a travel grant under IWSS must send:

  1. A Curriculum vitae and Motivation letter (max 1 page each).
  2. The submitted congress abstract is the one the candidate is presenting for which the student is also the first author. Candidates must submit the abstract to the regular submission portal and with the application package.
  3. A 5-page manuscript of the paper presented at the Congress as first author. The manuscript should be submitted as a PDF file with 12 pt Times New Roman font, 1.5 line spacing, and a 3-cm margin all around. The content must include a Summary (Abstract), Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, and References. All tables, figures, and photos are included in the 5-page limit. In the case of more than one paper being presented as the main author, candidates should choose one of them for this grant application. This submission is just for the competition, and the manuscript will not be published in the abstract book or elsewhere, only ABSTRACT will be published as with normal submissions.
  4. Tentative budget (estimate of travel, registration, accommodation, and meals costs, including the expenses covered by their home institution).
  5. Letter of commitment from the major professor on providing additional travel support (should the student receive the award). The letter should include confirmation from the Faculty or supervisor about the current student status. Candidates who have defended and cannot receive funding from their home institution must provide a letter from an alternative sponsor or a personal declaration stating they will cover the cost themselves.

All documents should be sent via e-mail to Dr. Nilda Roma-Burgos (nburgos@uark.edu), Chair of the Graduate Students Award Committee. The deadline for submission is June 15, 2025. The Graduate Students Award Committee will select the awardees according to the following criteria:

  1. quality and novelty of research,
  2. contribution to the discipline of weed science, and
  3. letter of application.

Applicants will be notified of the results on July 15, 2025.

Applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

  1. The candidate must be enrolled as a M.Sc. or Ph.D. student pursuing a degree related to weed science. Students who defended in 2024 are eligible to apply.
  2. Must present an oral or poster paper at the Congress as the main author.
  3. Acknowledge the travel grant sponsorship in his/her oral or poster presentation.
